As Umuaka Igbo Taa continue their work of re-orientating Igbo children, they visited St James Catholic Parish,Nnorie in Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area where they were warmly recieved by the Parish Priest,Very,Rev Fr. Anslem Ekeh and the Parishioners. After the Mass, the president of the group Chidi Opara – Ibeleche spoke to the children and youths, charging them to be proud to speak and live Igbo and when those in the cities return to display foreign culture, they should correct them in love and help them to feel at home. “As many of them now wish to return,we should recieve them and not chase them away with various forms of harassments.”
The President went ahead to tell the parents to continue relentlessly to make their children and wards embrace Igbo lauguage and the good culture of Igbo people and also help them to live less on borrowed culture and language.
The children who listened attentively to the president, were assured that they were better off as at today if they can speak their mothertongue and should not let their peers in the cities infuence them with foreign culture. Nevertheless, she told them to always read both Igbo and English books to make them fully literate. The president pointed out to the kids that learning and speaking their local language first, would make them better English students because they will strive to use better vocabulary when communicating instead of merely translating Igbo directly to English. She said for instance; “our children usually say,-Are you telling me that you use leg and come here?”which they translated directly from-ị chọrọ ị gwam na ị jiri ụkwụ bịa ngaa?
The climax of the day’s outing was the inauguration of St James Nnorie children as members of Umuaka Igbo Taa by inviting the co-ordinator,Mr Augustine Erukpeme to present Iwu Iri na Asato Umuaka Igbo Taa and other gift items from Tummy-Tummy noodles, officially to the Parish Priest for blessing.
The Parish Priest,Very Rev. Fr Anslem Ekeh expressed support to the NGO, saying, having gone through the Bye-Laws (IWU), he believes that the 18 bye-laws are all centered on the love of God in our daily relationship with one another. He prayed God to help our Igbo children to be re-orientated to correct the ugly trend of today.
Thereafter, Umuaka Igbo Taa were ushered into the Eze’s palace on a brief courtesy call on H.R.H Eze Prof. Noble C Eke (Orie 1 of Nnorie). The Eze whose daughter was being married traditionally on that day, still found time to take the visiting members of the UIT round his palace and even engaged the children in the native dance that boomed in the air. He was so glad to have the children come to him in traditional attire and promised to have a full day with the children next weekend to teach them all they should know about Igbo culture and also to help them get to their heights in their desired goal of re-orientating Igbo children home and abroad.
It is worthy of note that UIT have before now visited some parishes in Obollo, Isiala Mbano and Umuneke, Ngor- Okpala.
